Hello,
I'm trying to find an answer as to why pdf files generated from Freehand (via Adobe PDF printer driver) don't include text that can be copied/exported etc.
The text is visible, and can be selected normally in Acrobat with the select text tool. However, cut-and-paste copied text into any other program doesn't work -- the text is no longer normally encoded "text" -- but (at least on Win XP Pro) garbled symbols, lines and returns.
I've tried both with True Type and Type 1 fonts, but same result.
Of course, then things like email addresses within text aren't automatically hyperlinked either (as they are from Word, Ilustrator, InDesign etc) -- hyperlinks all have to set that up manually in Acrobat.
In one way, this is kind of "cool" and makes the file "encrypted" from copying by others without any security settings -- but is no good for PDF searching/indexing.
In the PDF font properties, all of the fonts get custome encoded as an embedded subset, with "Gen_" (occasionally "Gen.") at the start of the font name.
I've tried in Acrobat Print driver to both have "do not send fonts to Adobe PDF" selected and unselected, but with same result. Print Driver doesn't show any version number in its properties, I'm guessing though it is okay as files from other programs don't have this problem.
OS: Win XP Pro SP2. FH MXa. Acrobat 7.0.8 Pro. I've tried googling for results, but nothing specific comes up. Some discussion on "Gen_" named fonts, but no fix.
This problem has been around for many years, but now is something I'd prefer to resolve as many pdf files I'm creating are ending up online and need to be indexed and searchable. I've been using FH since v5.5, but cannot remember in earlier days if this was an issue!
I can post screenshots or example online if required.
Any solutions most welcome.
