graphics appear in text block

Some graphics with text that I have created in Freehand MX that are NOT grouped seem to somehow have become a single text block. If I click on it with an arrow, there are the lines of a text block around it and I can select the whole thing so it develops a black background using the text tool. I don't know how this occured and I cannot figure out how to split this up so I can alter the individual components.

Does anyone have any ideas?
