Hi There,

I'm hoping someone you can help? I am buy a new mac (Sierra operating system).. will I be able to transfer all my old design files created in Freehand MX Macromedia Version 11.00 build 416, from my vintage mac onto the new computer?

If so, how will I do this and how will I open them? I will be purchasing a license for the newest Illustrator, will old freehand files open using this?

Thanks in advance,

Jo

Memory/draw errors

Hi all

I get this problem roughly every 20-30 minutes of continual use. No matter what system, what place, or what OS. This has been going on ever since I started using FH, but put up with it until now.

All of a sudden, the screen will go white, and an error with one of "could not draw document because an unknown (ha) error has occured", or the same, but the excuse being lack of memory (not the case).

Does anyone know why Freehand 10 crashes every 20-30 minutes?

Tiff display and printing problem

I've tried every setting adjustment I can think of. I've attempted every fix recommended by Adobe. On-screen resolution is set at Full, document raster setting is at 300dpi. But the art I import as a tif still displays pixelated black lines and fills. RGB and CMYK both look the same. (Is it because I'm using an older version of Photoshop that doesn't play nice with Freehand MX?) I create the Freehand files, export as Mac or generic EPS, open in Photoshop, save as tif and import into a new Freehand document. And no matter what I try, the black lines and fills are badly pixelated. What am I missing? Many thanks in advance.

Toggling between the Illustrator and FreeHand forums, I can't help but notice the Illustrator forum goes on for pages and pages (going back months) whereas the moderator or webmaster for the FreeHand forum has been culling it down to one page, or only a couple weeks' worth of questions/answers. There are some good people writing this forum with lots of helpful hints; it's a shame that posted ideas disappear so fast. Not asking for an encyclopedia; but how about keeping a minimum of two pages worth of old/new comments? We're not a small community; and Adobe has a lot to learn from what we do, know, struggle with. And so do we, from each other.

Or could it be that Illustrator causes its users to need that many more pages of help?

Freehand Viewer

Hello. Many years ago in art school, I did some projects in freehand. Fast forward to now, I can't view the files as I no longer use the same OS as I once did. Does anyone know of a free MAC OS freehand viewer? I have Adobe CS and that won't read the files.

Any help would be appreciated.

Text along path in Leopard

I recently changed from WindowsXP to Mac (iMac, Intel 2.4) with Leopard. I have installed FHMX for Mac without any problems. Customizing the interface was somehow problematic compared with Win.

When opening my existing FH files in FHMX (Mac version), text looks blurred and ragged compared to XP. Especially (curved) text placed along a path looks terrible and smaller text (<6pts) is almost unreadable. Light text is a disaster, parts of the characters are greyish or very thin. I have set anti-aliasing already on strong and even that does not improve it very much. I am a cartographer and as such I do rely much on small text in maps. When I open FHMX (WinXP version) on my iMac using Parallels 3.0, the same text looks excellent and sharp again! Any suggestion to a newby on Mac like me? Is this due to difference between Mac'e way of anti-aliasing and Win's Clear Type anti-aliasing ?

Crashes with brushes

I've been getting intermittent FHMX crashes under these conditions:

1. Artwork contains at least one brush. The symbol, from which the brush is
made, is usually a composite path, fill, no stroke.

2. Select a few objects including a brush, clone, group, drag to new
location.

3. The beachball starts spinning and then FHMX crashes.

Has anyone experienced this?

dpi woes

The default web page size is set to 550 x 400 at 300dpi. I am designing a web page for 1024 x 600 (non-standard I know). If I create graphics in Freehand that I would want to transfer to Fireworks for optimization (at 72dpi) the image size will change.
My question is then, since I can't set the dpi in Freehand to 72, what size do I set the page size to so that when I bring the page into the web page world, it will be the right size.

Thx in advance!

Horrible issues with FreehandMX on 10.5.6 Help!

I just purchased a new Mac Mini with 4mb ram in March '09. I was previously using FHMX on my iMac on 10.3.9 with relativley few issues. Mostly crashing because of what I thought was lack of sufficient RAM. I only had 1.5mb on the iMac. Since upgrading to the Mac Mini I have experienced the following issues and don't know if it's Freehand or the new machine.

1. Intermittent loss of keyboard control. All of the sudden, keyboard is no longer respoinsive. To revive it I can pull down a menu item from the toolbar and it begins working again.

2. Two (yes two!!) blue screens of death. All of the sudden, keyboard control and mouse control are lost. Then a blue screen which after a few seconds a spinning beach ball, then the OS returns to the Finder and ALL open applications have quit! This, is to say the least, a terrifying experience. Both times, I have been working in Freehand when this happened.

3. Intermittent crashes, just like on the iMac. Most recently, crashed upon opening a file. Then when relaunched, opening the same file caused no issues.

I am beside myself thinking I can no longer use Freehand and don't know if indeed it is Freehand causing all these problems or it is the new Mac Mini and some kind of hardware issue.

Does anyone have any idea why these things could be occuring or if you have had the same issues is there a way to fix it. I've searched the forums and web for weeks and at this point have found nothing.

Thanks!

FHMX bleed & crop?I

I've always preferred Freehand when creating print documents.  But, somewhere along the line, upgrading to FHMX as well as upgrading to O.S. Leopard and Snow Leopard, I can't find a print setup box that includes such as separations, bleed and trim.  A little help?

11.0.2 build 92 sluggish on OS 10.6.3 MacBook Pro

I recently purchased a new MacBook Pro 2.26 GHz INtel Core Duo with 4 GB ram and installed the latest version of FH. The performance is very sluggish, sometimes taking 5-10 seconds for a new document to open after pressing the command + N keyboard combo. FH10 on my old G4 867 MP was much more responsive. Does anyone have any advice for speeding up FH11 on my new, supposedly faster computer.

thanks in advance,

Freehand & Windows 7

Does completely work on Windows 7 or are there compatibility issues?

Can't create PDF's via the print dialog and cannot export as PDF or EPS.

Need to know for certain if these features no longer work with Windows 7 or if something went awry on my installation.

Thank you.

Urgent help please -Reload Freehand

I have been using Freehand 10.4.9 for yars (sad maybe, bug it works and I love it) but all of a sudden it won't work properly. I create a document and send it to print. It downloads, then just quits. The job still prints, but I have to relaunch the program before I can use it again. Also, the document does not appear under 'open recent' .

So I thought - reload the software. Trouble is all my software is in the  form of an upgrade (I have upgraded since V1). So, do I just reload the last upgrade (Freehand MX)  and thats it, or do I have to do something else.  I really can't  remember what I did last time (2005)!
I don't want to totally unpick what I have got at the moment, even  though it is not working properly, until I have finished the job I am  working on. Help please will be much appreciated.

Freehand does not export lens fills or tints to PDF.

I've had this issue forever and would be really grateful for any advice.

Whenever I export out of Freehand to PDF it ignores any lens fills or tint panels I've created and leaves them behind.

Any ideas anyone?

Thanks, J

Mac OS 10.6.6 & Freehand MX

Anyone out there that can help me? I have MX installed but cannot upgrade to 11.0.1 or 11.0.2 on my Intell based Imac. I spent at least 12 hours on the phone with Adobe and their final evaluation was to forget Freehand and spend $200 for Illustrator. They are telling me that I can't use MX on MacOS 10.6.6, I know that it is not true, because I'm using it now...I just can't upgrade, so that I can use a pressure sensitive Wacom pad, which is how I draw for ALL my design work. I also have MX installed on a G5 tower running OS 10.5.8 and it supports the Wacom pad. I have never used Illustrator, except for transfering files for use in Freehand. I purchased my retail copy of MX off Ebay, because my version 10 did not support  the Wacom, how could they have overlooked such an important feature in 10? Now I have the upgraded MX 11.0 and it does not support Wacom on my newest Intel Imac running 10.6.6. The more I update the more I wish I still had my G3 running Freehand 8. When I started in the design/Ilustration world after the Art Institute of Pittsburgh in '83 I had a set af Mars pens and a pad of vellum....ahh those where the days! But now I'm just rambling! Any suggestions that don't entail working on a Windows based PC?

Did latest Mac 10.5.8 update kill Freehand?

Long time FH user, didn't upgrade to Snow Leopard specifically to keep FH running. It's been humming along on my MacBook Pro for 2 years. Yesterday I allowed an automatic Apple system update as I do all the time and now Freehand will no longer start. The icon bounces around in the dock as if it's starting, settles, but never opens on the desktop. Right click on the icon shows 'application not responding.' So I uninstalled/reinstalled, repaired permissions, tried to open on another user account. No luck. Anyone have any ideas? I'm seriously going to have to find an old Tiger Mac just to open my files and convert to Illustrator if I can't get this resolved.

Latest Snow Leopard and "Save" or "Save" as issue: Freehand quits

Hello

I've just installed the latest security update for Snow Leopard 10.6.8 on my MacPro 2008. It seems that I can't save my Freehand files anymore, Freehand quits every time. Do you have similar issues?

Illustrator no longer opens FH files!

Just a 'heads up' to anyone who may still be lurking this board. With the release of Illustrator CS6 Adobe has apparently dropped support for opening FreeHand files i.e. Ai CS6 no longer opens FH files! Whether this is a short term glitch will probably largely depend on how vociferous the FH user base are in their desire to see this functionality restored. It seems to me now more than ever (esp. on Mac's going forward) that we do need to know there will be a program capable of running on contemporary architectures that can open FH files.
