Urgent help please -Reload Freehand

I have been using Freehand 10.4.9 for yars (sad maybe, bug it works and I love it) but all of a sudden it won't work properly. I create a document and send it to print. It downloads, then just quits. The job still prints, but I have to relaunch the program before I can use it again. Also, the document does not appear under 'open recent' .

So I thought - reload the software. Trouble is all my software is in the  form of an upgrade (I have upgraded since V1). So, do I just reload the last upgrade (Freehand MX)  and thats it, or do I have to do something else.  I really can't  remember what I did last time (2005)!
I don't want to totally unpick what I have got at the moment, even  though it is not working properly, until I have finished the job I am  working on. Help please will be much appreciated.

FreeHand and Lion (Mac Os X 10.7). The game is over

Is sad, but Freehand ends this summer, with Mac Os X 10.7. Lion will drop Rossetta (the emulation code to support legacy Power PC programs). Freehand runs smoothly in Snow Leopard but it hasn't been ported to intel version.

Easy fix for export/print problem with Freehand under Win7/Vista

For all of those who encountered a dreaded error 'read or write access denied' with Freehand printing or exporting to EPS/PDF under Windows 7 or Vista, there may be an easy fix.

 

 

Conditions:

 

  • Freehand v.10 or MX (may affect other versions, not tested)
  • Windows 7 (tested with 64-bit Win7 Home Premium, but probably affects other versions)
  • Windows Vista (not tested, but other people report the same issue)

 

 

 

Symptoms:

 

  • Export from Freehand to EPS or PDF fails with an error message Could not save the document because read of write access has been denied
  • Printing to any Postscript printer – either online or print to file – or printing to Adobe PDF – fails with the same error as above, plus the Postscript interpreter error appears.

 

 

Solution:

  • Open the Freehand Preferences dialog: Edit ⇒ Preferences ⇒ Export (tab)
    Make sure the UserPrep file field is NOT EMPTY. Although you may probably write anything into this field (it works even with a dummy text - tested!), it's safe to create a blank text file and save it into your \Userprep folder (C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Macromedia\FreeHand\10\English\Settings\Userprep) with an extension .prp - i.e. fix.prp, and then input that filename into the required field in the FH dialog.
  • Exporting to EPS or PDF should now work without any errors related to this issue
  • When you open the print dialog (assuming the selected printer is Postscript or Adobe PDF writer - or any other PDF writer, for that matter), you should see your userprep file listed in the job summary tree menu. Printing should also work without any errors related to this issue.
  • The same method works with Freehand MX, obviously the location of \Userprep folder is different

Did latest Mac 10.5.8 update kill Freehand?

Long time FH user, didn't upgrade to Snow Leopard specifically to keep FH running. It's been humming along on my MacBook Pro for 2 years. Yesterday I allowed an automatic Apple system update as I do all the time and now Freehand will no longer start. The icon bounces around in the dock as if it's starting, settles, but never opens on the desktop. Right click on the icon shows 'application not responding.' So I uninstalled/reinstalled, repaired permissions, tried to open on another user account. No luck. Anyone have any ideas? I'm seriously going to have to find an old Tiger Mac just to open my files and convert to Illustrator if I can't get this resolved.

Just a 'heads up' to anyone who may still be lurking this board. With the release of Illustrator CS6 Adobe has apparently dropped support for opening FreeHand files i.e. Ai CS6 no longer opens FH files! Whether this is a short term glitch will probably largely depend on how vociferous the FH user base are in their desire to see this functionality restored. It seems to me now more than ever (esp. on Mac's going forward) that we do need to know there will be a program capable of running on contemporary architectures that can open FH files.

Illustrator CS6 has corrupted CS3, freehand files cannot be opened.

Have a computer with CS3 on it, which is used to open FH10 files.

However last week I installed CS6 on it and now I am unable to open FH10 files in CS3.

Uninstalled CS6, didnt work. Reinstalled CS3, didnt work.

 

So CS6 has aperently corrupted CS3. Does anyone have a solution?

Im thinking I might try a registry transplant from a computer with a fresh install of CS3.

They say it will no longer run on OSX Mountain Lion?

 

'Stagestack' will be taking over if you don't listen the established design comunity.

I for one will be using it.

Freehand MX Shuts Down After entering serial number

I have located the page on the Adobe site with all the serial numbers for unsupported Macromedia apps. When enter the number for Freehand MX, after following the instructions, Freehand immediately shuts down. When I try to reattempt this, there is an existing serial number in the fields and it starts with WPD700. I see no suggested serial numbers on the Adobe page starting with WPD....could I have a student version? Does that matter? Thanks!

I have a sealed Macromedia FreeHand 10 software. But, on the lower left side of the package, it says "Upgrade". What does this mean? Do I have to have the previous version of FreeHand to use this?

Editing a repeated shape throughout

I could have sworn I'd seen this before. I've got a large graphic made up of many shapes that tile and repeat themselves at various angles. They are made up of raster based images (a photo pasted inside a polygon). What I'd like to do is change ONE image and have it echo the change everywhere that shape is used. I thought I'd seen somewhere that there's a way to link all the repeats of the shape together so if I changed on, all othes would reflect that change, but I cant seem to find it, and don't even know what keywords to search under.

 

The application for this is to audition fabrics for a quilt pattern like this:

Rather than copy/pasting the shape over and over and working out the exact angles each time, there must be a way to make it once, and by changing ONE shape (most likely one off to the side) to show a different fabric, it will reflect the change through all the pieces that are linked to it.

I have fh8 files that have been changed to exec files. I am trying to open these into illustrator. I tried CS6 cc2014 and CC2015. I also changed the end of the file name to .fh8 but still no luck can anyone help please?

FHmx toolbar missing

We do not have access to the main toolbar on our Mac Intel 10.4.10 based machine for Freehand 11.0.2. Our other machine is a generic Mac and does not have this problem. We have tried the fixits listed for 'missing toolbar' but that doesn't appear to work. Any clues anyone?

I was sent a FrreHand MX file that i need to edit in InDesign CS2. Is there any way to open it? It shows up as a blank page icon in the finder.

Just a heads up that something fundamental to font rendering seems to have changed with this update and has made FH unusable for me (Myriad Pro now looks like a barcode font) and I for one will be rolling back to 10.6.6. I have trashed font caches & restarted, tried putting all fonts into system fonts folder and restarted and nothing seems too make any difference. If anyone has successfully updated without problems for FH please let me know!

Update to Freehand MX 11.0.2

Please update Freehand MX 11.0.2 on all platforms.  I'm running OS X 10.6.8.  Have custom installed Rosetta but the application will no longer launch but was working fine in early 2014.  February 2014 came in and Freehand stop working.  I reinstall MX 10 and it launches but will not print.

 

And YES I will pay for Freehand update.
