I am getting an odd error when I go to print from Freehand MX 11. I am running Windows XP with SP3. When I go to print an .eps file it tells me that "The specified printer could not be initialized. Try a different printer, or reinstall the printer driver." I have removed the printer driver and reinstalled it as well as Freehand. This does not seem to fix the issue. My default printer in Windows is set and Freehand is trying to use another printer driver associated with my multi-printer. It is trying to send it to the "Fax" driver instead of the normal printer driver. I have uploaded a screenshot of the error message. Thanks in advance for any help given. Remove All Overprints
Maybe I'm missing something very obvious, but I can't seem to
find a way to remove all overprints in a document. Is there a way?
We received a very complex multi-page layout from a customer, and either they didn't understand what overprints are or they simply paid no attention to what they were clicking. There are random elements set to overprint all throughout, and we need to turn them all off. Unforunately the only time the overprint checkbox appears is when you have a single object selected; unlike Illustrator I cannot select all and turn off the overprints for everything.
Is there a workaround for this, or am I being blind (like usual) and missing the obvious?

The right way to do it, IMO
I understand Adobe purchase Macromedia. When I hear that, I
knew FreeHand was doomed. There hasn't been an update to MX in so
long and there are so many bugs popping up since Tiger was
released.
As a company, the right way to do in, IMO, is to continue with both FreeHand and Illustrator and making them closer together until you merge the 2. There are too many differences between Illustrator and FreeHand to make it comfortable for me to switch. I don't have time to relearn the feel of Illustrator to draw with smoothness. It just feels wrong. But if they were to continue FreeHand and change the feel over lets say 2 - 3 upgrades, then merge, there would be a far greater response. But of course, does the cost of doing this justify the customer base, only Adobe knows this.
I dislike Illustrator so much that I am considering purchasing a PC and running CorelDrawX3, and I'm a Mac guy!

Freehand Viewer
Hello. Many years ago in art school, I did some projects in
freehand. Fast forward to now, I can't view the files as I no
longer use the same OS as I once did. Does anyone know of a free
MAC OS freehand viewer? I have Adobe CS and that won't read the
files.

Freehand 11.02 No Longer Opening Leopard 10.5.8
Hi, I am hoping you can help me. I am running Leopard 10.5.8 and in the last few days Freehand 11.02 is refusing to launch. The icon keeps bouncing in The Dock. I downloaded the Adobe Fix although I do not think that it is applicable. I have repaired permissions, reinstalled Freehand, deleted preferences. I have researched extensively online to no avail.. Any further ideas? It is such a wonderful programme. Thank you

Batch conversion of old Freehand clipart files to AI or EPS?
I've found several threads about simply opening an old Freehand file into Illustrator, but I am looking for a utility that can convert the entire disk, or at least entire folders at one time. Looks like I have the Freehand 5 and Freehand 7 clipart disks and booklets.
I have Macromedia MX, along with the CS5 Design Premium suite on this Windows7 system.
A lot of the clipart from that period looks very similar. I start to wonder if I don't already have the same artwork in other packages.
I have been copying my clipart CDs to my hard drives and started trying to catalog them. Extensis Portfolio 8.5 appears to be reading AI, EPS, TIF, BMP, JPG, & WMF, but I don't think it is generating preview images for FH5 or even Corel Draw's CDR formats,
Any help or advice would be appreciated.

importing Hebrew text/font
I have been sent a PDF file with text that has been
translated into a Hebrew font. I have downloaded the font but when
I copy/paste into the freehand file, it says the font is not
available (also does not show in my font list)
I have turned on "Hebrew" in my Regional language window within the windows XP control panel.
I just need to be able to convert to paths for a design element. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Problems with Leopard 10.5.3 ?
I did upgrade to 10.5.3 two days ago, today I can not open
freehand naymore, its just there in the dock jumping, but doesnt
start. I suppose I did use it after install 10.5.3 but deleting
preferences and application support files and also new install of
freehand did not result.
Anyone with similar experiences?

Trying to locate file format specifications for Freehand 9, 10 and MX files. From what I've seen on the 'net, they weren't made availabe to the public by Macromedia.
With Freehand considered "dead" by Adobe, why couldn't Adobe release the format specs? Surely this can't be a big deal to the Macromedia people at Adobe anymore.

Export my Freehand Document
I am trying to export a brochure as a jpg because I need to
keep the file size down. But my computer keeps giving me the
message that it does not have enough memory to do it- I even tried
the computer at work, but same message. I also tried exporting as a
pdf, even though the file would be too big, and got a message about
it not being able to exactly reproduce the document b/c it contains
paths with more than 5000 pts.
I am pretty new to freehand and I am thinking that perhaps I imported things from fireworks at sizes too large. I tried to match the pixel size that I would need, but I would often still have to enlarge things by 400%.

Typing with French FreeHand
I use the French version of FreeHand with a US keyboard.
Problem is I can't type properly with it – FreeHand seems to
use the European French keyboard layout. How can I modify this and
force it to use the North American (US or French Canadian) mapping?

Degree symbol (option shift 8)
I've been struggling with a problem when outputting an Xpress
file (containing an eps generated in FHMX) as a PDF. I was getting
an error saying that there was a missing screen font - Symbol -
even though the Symbol font isn't used anywhere in the FH document
(and didn't show up in the collect for output report from FH
either)..
After much digging it turns out that, although I was using Bitstream Zurich (in various weights) and no other fonts in the FH document, the problem was caused by the Degrees character (as in temperature) which was selected using alt/shift/8 as normal. With this character in I got the missing font call, with it removed all was well. Converting to paths solved it (of course) but I still don't know why using this character makes for a bogus font call.

So I'm working on a file, I close it, then I can't re-open
it. Bizarrely, the same file WILL open on another PC OK. (a puny
IBM ThinkPad)

read write error printing to PDF with FH10 and vista
I just moved to my new Vista Ult 64bit machine and needed to
bring my old(er) Freehand 10 app and files with me. I need to print
to PDFs from Freehand and cannot do so at present, could find not
tips at Adobe site either. (Using export to PDF gives me fuzzy text
and other probs, therefore I print to PDF).
From Freehand10, I select print and as printer Adobe PDF (or PDF creator from Source Forge, same problem) and the pdf creation begins, a pdf file name is requested and then comes the error message "could not complete the command because read or write access has been denied." A log file is presented on screen:

Convert EPS images from Mac to PC
I wonder if anyone have any experience of converting large
quantities of images from Mac to PC? I have several thousands of
freehand eps-images saved for Mac that I need to convert to a
PC-eps. Anyone know any application that can accomplish
this?

Is Illustrator CS4 capable of doing the "export selected" command that's similar to what's available in Freehand. Sorry to post this here, but I've searched the Illustrator Forum with no luck. Thanks.

Odd behavior writing postscript & eps files
I'm using Freehand 9 and it works pretty well under Windows 7 (oddly enough, and not even in Windows XP mode).
The trouble I'm having is that it likes to add strange characters before downloaded fonts in EPS and postscript files (also when printing to the Acrobat PDF driver). Freehand appends characters to the front of the font name like so:
ADCFAA+Fontnamehere
or
Gen_Fontnamehere
This causes distiller to not be able to find the system font, therefore the font isn't used and substituted with Courier. Freehand also inexplicably downloads some fonts to the postscript file while not others. Yes, the embed bit within the fonts are all set to "Installable", or full embedding allowed. If I manually edit the postscript file before distilling (removing the "ADCFAA+" or the "Gen_" strings), distiller will find the system font and embed it per the distiller setting. The fonts are postscript opentype format.
Any ideas how to fix this? Is there a userprep file which might help or some other setting?
